It was an overcast summers afternoon when I headed to a big country house near Hurstpierpoint to film Carol and Jacques party.
The party was a two-fold celebration. It was primarily Jacques 70th birthday party, but it was also a house warming, as the couple had only recently moved in to the huge property. Indeed Jacque made a point of asking friends and family to visit regularly as the place us far too big for just the two of them!
There were approximately 100 guests. There was a marquee set up in the garden in case of rain but thankfully it held off. Carol and Jacques party was essentially organised by Carol. She had arranged a variety of entertainment for the afternoon beginning with Morris dancers.
Old Shoreham Buccaneers
The Old Shoreham Buccaneers are a relatively new group who describe themselves as a mixed Morris Side performing traditional Cotswold and Border English Folk dances.
They certainly seemed to enjoy themselves and held the guests attention up until they asked for volunteers to join in the dancing! This was a step too far for most and the invitation was politely declined.
Magician Matt Parro
It really is artistry. To watch slight of hand deception at such close quarters is stunning. You know it’s a trick, you know he’s just being quick with his hands and yet he still fools you. Matt Parro’s website is here if you are considering booking his services. Well worth it in this author’s view.
Brillo the Clown
Brillo the Clown was an excellent addition to the entertainment on offer and kept the children amused for much of the afternoon. His act included all the skills you might expect from a clown: juggling, riding tiny cycles, balancing, mime and general buffoonery!
Tony Parsons Caricature Artist
He worked quickly in black marker pen and was done in just a few minutes. He would make a packet sat in Trafalgar Square all day. Although he has won some awards so he probably wouldn’t thank me for suggesting that! Here’s his website.
Megan was actually a guest at the party and one of Carol’s daughter’s friends. However, she was for me the outstanding entertainment of the day. For an 18 year old to sing opera with such precision was astounding to me.
She performed Adele’s Laughing Song and blew everyone away with how accurately she pitched, the control she had of her diaphragm and the crispness of her diction. Not to mention her confidence as a performer. Thoroughly excellent stuff!
Carol and Jacques Party
As it grew dark most guests congregated in the lounge to here Megan sing and to watch Jacque cut his birthday cake. As is customary we all sang Happy Birthday and Matt performed a final few tricks before the party began to wind down.
Although I was there to film video, I also took the opportunity to photograph Carol and Jacque with their extended families. Some of Jacque’s relatives had come over from France and it was one if those rare occasions, as happens in all families, where a number of family members are together in the same place at the same time.
