The beginning of October 2012 was a busy time for Occasion Photos. On the 7th I found myself at the beautiful parish church of St. Marys, to shoot the christening at Sompting, West Sussex of Toby and Harry. It’s a church I have photographed at a few times now, including Jenni and Phil’s Wedding, which you can read about here.
St Marys Church Sompting
The church has a Saxon tower thought to have been constructed prior to 1000CE (Common Era) and the Knights Templar were granted patronage of the church prior to their dissolution in the 14th century. So it is a church with some history, set in a very peaceful village on the edge of Worthing. You can read more on the St Marys church website
Christening at Sompting
One minor problem with such old stone churches is that the are often freezing, even in warm weather. This was the case on this beautiful early autumn day. Toby and Harry looked splendid dressed in all white suits. The service was conducted in as informal a way as possible with family and friends invited to stand up at the front of the church and then round the font itself. Children being children it was, at times, a loud and excitable affair!
I did my best to position myself to be out of the way, yet at the same time, right in the thick of the action! Not easy to achieve. I was given permission to shoot as much as I liked during the service and then afterwards we took various group and family shots outside.
I am still learning as a photographer, even though I have been taking photographs for over 20 years. I still need to remember to watch for shadows across faces. It is most irritating to get to the edit stage of a shoot to find shots I thought looked great at the time marred by my lack of attention to tiny detail. There are, however, enough decent shots for me to present a comprehensive overview of the event. As I was not required for very long, I agreed a bespoke price which included my time and all the images on CD.

The christening at Sompting was my final session shooting with my Nikon DSLR. I have now purchased a Canon 5D Mark II, which I will begin using at Shaun and Wendy’s wedding in Lewes at the end of the month. If you have a Wedding, Christening or special event on the horizon, please give Occasion Photos a call on 07531 171706. I am sure we can meet your needs and surpass your expectations.
