Highdown Hotel Wedding Venue Review

Sara and Robert, held their wedding breakfast and evening reception at the Highdown Hotel in January 2013. This Highdown Hotel Wedding Venue Review discusses the building, grounds, staff, food and photographic opportunities from a wedding photographers perspective.

The hotel is in Goring, very near to Worthing, West Sussex. It is a 10 minute drive to the seafront and main shopping area. It is set off the main A259 road between Worthing and Littlehampton and far enough away from it to feel secluded and quiet.

Building and Grounds

The Highdown Hotel is not a large house and there are pleasant but not extensive gardens, but it is comfortable and friendly. It is wood panelled throughout and the outside is a grey stone. It looks very much like an old farmhouse. Unfortunately on the day I photographed Sara and Robert’s wedding, it was cold and miserable. As a result we spent most of our time indoors.

Function Room

The main function room, where Sara and Robert’s wedding breakfast and evening reception were held, is large enough to accommodate 200 people comfortably. It has a very grand staircase leading down into the room, which is below ground. This is the only snag I identified as there are no windows. If it was a beautiful sunny summer evening, I can imagine it being a little stuffy and frustrating to be down in the basement with no natural light. That aside it is a lovely space.

Staff Attitude and Appearance

The staff at the Highdown Hotel seem courteous and polite. They were happy to help and relatively speedy. The uniforms are functional rather than stylish.

Wedding Photograph Opportunities

My Highdown Hotel Wedding Venue Review has to include information on photographic opportunities for wedding photographers and for those getting married. On a sunny day photographs outdoors would be lovely in the gardens. No great views, but pretty flowers, greenery and stone buildings. Indoors the grand staircase is great for big group photos and the wood panelled rooms make for nice formal old fashioned style pictures.

Food Taste and Presentation

The food was served relatively swiftly. However, I did not eat with the wedding party. Rather I went to the small cafe attached to the hotel, where the food I was served was perfectly decent and well presented.

Room Quality and Sleep Score

I cannot comment on the hotel rooms or the quality of a nights sleep at the Highdown as I did not stay there.

That’s it for my Highdown Hotel Wedding Venue Review. My overall impressions of the hotel as a wedding photographer, are largely positive and I look forward to photographing there again soon.
