Wedding in Upwaltham Parish Church

Upwaltham Parish

What a beautiful location for Basia and Michal’s wedding at Upwaltham parish church, West Sussex in August 2012.

Wedding in Upwaltham Parish

I arrived early to make sure I allowed for the possibility that I might get lost. Sat Nav is all very wel, but sometimes a postcode simply leads to a stretch of road and tells you “you have arrived at your destination”! Sure enough I did drive too far, but eventually spotted the church up on the hillside. As it was, I was first on the scene. The church in Upwaltham parish is Norman, tiny and around 900 years old. It is set on a hill with rolling countryside all around. It really is a lovely setting.

Basia and Michal are from Poland. It’s Polish tradition for the bride and groom to arrive at the church together, although the bride still enters the church with her father, or whoever is giving her away. On this occasion, the whole party arrived in three cars.

In almost every way it was a typical English church wedding save that the readings were in Polish. The hymns were very traditional English, sung mainly by the small choir drafted in for the ceremony.

Stunning Scenery

At the back of the church is a huge corn field stretching back up the hill and some of the most successful pictures were taken using this field as the backdrop. The weather was rather changeable, so one minute there was bright sunlight and the next we had dramatic dark clouds up above. I’m very pleased with the resulting images and I know Basia and Michal love them too.

Having never been to Upwaltham parish church before I was blown away by how pretty it was, nestled on the hillside. I would love to photograph another wedding there one day if only to make use of that wonderful backdrop once again. There is another wedding venue in the village of Upwaltham called Upwaltham Barns. I would imagine a wedding at Upwaltham Parish church and a reception at Upwaltham Barns would be a thing of splendour and beauty.
